Not the shoes, not the route, not even the fitness gains — the simple act of writing down or logging each run. This isn't a coincidence or a personality quirk. It's a well-studied behavioral phenomenon, and it explains why tracking tools — from paper logs to GPS watches to apps — are consistently associated with better long-term exercise adherence than intention alone.

The Brain Needs Feedback to Sustain Effort

Running produces real physiological benefits — improved VO2 max, better cardiovascular health, mood regulation through endorphins and BDNF — but almost all of it is invisible on a day-to-day basis. You don't feel your resting heart rate drop by two beats per minute. You don't see your mitochondrial density increase. The reward is real, but it's slow and largely imperceptible in the short term.

Progress Data Supports Autonomy, Not Just Accountability

It's worth separating tracking from surveillance.
